The brief:

East Liberty Development, Inc. (ELDI) is a community development corporation based in Pittsburgh’s East Liberty neighborhood — one of the state's most vibrant communities in the 1950s, which fell into decline following urban renewal era changes. Since the late 90s, ELDI has worked to revitalize the community according to the vision of its long-time residents. However, the organization has struggled with accusations of gentrification and displacement. Since 2014, ES Content Creative has led ELDI’s communications efforts with a central goal: to shift the narrative. That meant positioning the organization as the long-standing community advocate that it is by showcasing the visionary nature of its work.

The narrative arc:

To reshape public perception, we developed a content strategy focused on transparency, storytelling, and impact. This included managing day-to-day communications and community management, crafting resident-centered narratives, and highlighting ELDI’s work to preserve affordability and empower legacy residents. In 2017, we led a full website redesign to better reflect the organization’s mission and values, and in 2021 we led development of a 20+ year retrospective impact report to share ELDI's work and framework for change with a wider audience.

The impact

Over nearly a decade of partnership, our ongoing content and strategy support has helped ELDI become more accessible and better understood by the public it serves. The brand now communicates with greater clarity and compassion across platforms, creating space for more nuanced conversations around housing, equity, and neighborhood change. As the work continues, so does the storytelling — centering the voices of East Liberty residents every step of the way. The stats back this up. In 2024, eastliberty.org received significant traffic, with a total of 22,595 sessions and 17,146 visitors. The website also garnered over 50,000 views, up 105% from the previous year. ELDI's monthly newsletter maintains a 39% open rate and 7% click rate, while social media engagement stands at 10.4%
